Deactivating Facebook

You might be wondering if something is wrong with me? Before I tell you that, I'd like to let you know that I never thought it would made me feel this good deactivating my Facebook account for straight two weeks now.

I will not remove the fact that Facebook is a good platform... for some people, especially now that it became helpful financially. But we should not forget that it is also possible for someone to get their mental health damaged.

We, unconsciously became accustomed to social media that we forgot what was our lives back when social media was not essential as what it is now. In my case, I felt like social media does not only tainted my life but it also destroyed my mental health at some point.

As time goes by, we spent most our times in front of screens than the people who are just around us but rarely got noticed because of social media.

I remembered my grandpa, who never learned to use Facebook even before he died which I totally regret. Btw, he just passed away last March and up until now I'm still having a hard time to accept that he was already gone. Anyway, I just remembered everytime I'm around him, he always get my attention to remind me I staring at my phone the whole time without noticing him which made me realized now that staring at the phone is an opportunity cost on making  priceless memories with him

If not because of what happened to me which forced me to deactivate my Facebook, I would never felt this actual and genuine freedom for straight two weeks now.

Although, social media deactivation would get us low exposure with real time news updates but let us not forget there are TVs and newspapers that are still available out there that we used even before we had these social media platforms.

Sometimes, you have to detach yourself from social media to find the genuine "YOU"

To be honest, deactivating my account was actually the hardest decision that I ever made. My work at some point rely on Facebook. I have clients from it, friends, relatives and such. I guess anyone will feel the same way.

As much as I want to show my kindness and sincerity to everyone to surround myself with good people because I always wanted a healthy environment, I forgot that there will always be someone who will took advantage of you and there will always be a person who will show you good in the beginning but they are actually evil behind.

I was one with the “I-cannot-live-without-Facebook.” bandwagon. But when something worst happened, my anxiety went back which almost led me to depression if I did not deactivated my account on time.

You know the feeling that you want to talk about it, shout your angst but something is suppressing you in the inside? It's worst! I cannot tell anyone, not even to my parents. I really don't want to talk, but I feel the need to talk or else I will explode in the inside. So, the only people that I can lean on at that time are my best friends. I told my two best friends and one of them advised me to pray and talk to the Lord which I did as soon we ended our conversation.

I was in total shock, anxious and desperate on what must I do to get away from it. My best friend told me to block him. Although it’s easy to block people from Facebook but what terrify me the most is the possibility that they might post something negative about me blocking them since I am friends with his relatives on Facebook even I didn't do anything bad. You know, the person who a lot more to say is the person who really don’t know what happened.

I want to forget but it constantly flashing back to my mind. I was so desperate that I cannot do anything but to hit my head every time it will crosses my mind and hit my head the hardest as possible whenever it flashes vividly. I even hit my head to the wall just to forget.

I also diverted all my attention with things I love and want to do. I even purchased and installed mobile app games even though I am not a gamer. All just to forget.

Afterall, deactivating my Facebook for weeks now improved my mental state. Although I honestly still feel anxious and terrified sometimes but it lessen than what it was before. I also finally began to live my own life and felt this actual freedom that I never know is existing.

It's true that environment has a big factor that will most likely influence who we are. Hence, whatever environment we may be at (digital or physical), if it's damaging our mental health and lives, it's a decision that we should never think twice to get away from.

Offline is the new luxury

I have no against with anyone using social media, but I just want to let you know that after I deactivated my account, I was reminded that social media is never a responsibility nor an obligation to check time to time, scroll timelines endlessly, posting stuffs that everyone would love.

We may not notice it right now but we are actually wasting our golden time living with everyone’s  life standard. We, unintentionally, depend ourselves with number of likes, shares, comments that we forget who we truly are and how to live an authentic life.

So, if you think it's not good with your mental health anymore, just let it go. Because sometimes, you have to disengage yourselves with unhealthy things to be able to discover the genuine You.
